Why Africa? Why Livestock? Why Female Vets?
At SheVets Africa, we believe in the transformative power of livestock, the untapped potential of women, and the promise of science to create a more resilient and equitable future for African communities.
Why Africa?
Africa is home to rich agricultural traditions, vast natural resources, and vibrant rural communities. Yet, many face daily challenges of poverty, malnutrition, and increasing climate threats. In this context, livestock is not just an asset—it’s a lifeline.
Why Livestock?
Livestock plays a central role in Africa’s social, economic, and environmental fabric:
  • Livelihoods & Income: Over 60% of rural households in sub-Saharan Africa rely on livestock for income, employment, and savings. In regions without access to formal banking, livestock serves as a “walking bank” (FAO, 2018).
  • 🥛 Nutrition & Food Security: Livestock contributes essential nutrients that are key in fighting child undernutrition and stunting (ILRI, 2020).
  • 🌿 Climate Resilience: Sustainable livestock systems—such as pasture restoration, manure use, and crop-livestock integration—are effective tools for adapting to climate variability (IPCC, 2019).
  • 🎓 Cultural Identity: Livestock is deeply woven into cultural practices and social structures across African societies.
Why Female Veterinarians?
Women are the backbone of livestock care in many African communities—especially in managing poultry, small ruminants, and dairy—but they remain under-supported and under-recognized:
  • Women make up over 50% of the agricultural labor force, yet they face limited access to:
  • Land ownership
  • Veterinary services
  • Training and innovation
  • Scientific tools and financing
    (ILRI, 2015)
This gender gap holds back productivity, sustainability, and rural development.
Our Response: SheVets Africa
SheVets Africa is not just a program—it’s a movement.
We are building a future where African women veterinarians and livestock professionals are leaders in innovation, sustainability, and rural transformation.
Contribution to SDGs
SheVets Africa contributes to:
  • SDG 1 & 2 (No Poverty & Zero Hunger) by improving livestock productivity and incomes.
  • SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by empowering women in science and agriculture.
  • SDG 13 (Climate Action) through advocacy and training in low-emission livestock practices.
